This May, for the third year in a row, I joined my fellow artisans for Salon – an international annual gathering of decorative painters, applied artists, educators and vendors. Held in different city each year, the 2016 convening took place in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg Russia, and was hosted by the decorative painter Tatiana Rugers.
At the heart of this annual event is an organization comprised of passionate people united by the love of distinguished decorative art techniques and a desire to share their style, practical knowledge and technical prowess.
There is an intention to be the best you can be, contribute and give something back.
At this year’s event, works representing artists from 21 countries were on view. Master class demonstrations on wood graining, airbrush portraiture, the use of illusive perspective, oversized trompe l’oeil ornament, Vert de Mer marble, trompe l’oeil drapery, Italian Grotesque and creating illusion of space and air were offered.
The panel I displayed is a water gilded panel inspired by one of the many domes in St.Petersburg. The panel is Medex carved with a CNC, traditional gesso, French Yellow Bole from International Gilders Supply, double gilded with Manetti 23k Florin gold leaf and spray finished with Opex clear lacquer.
